Why Your LCP
Is Lying to You

Lab scores and field data diverge for a reason. Here's what PageSpeed Insights doesn't tell you about real user experience — and how to close the gap.

You run your site through PageSpeed Insights. The LCP comes back at 1.9 seconds — solidly green. You close the tab feeling good. But your bounce rate is high, your conversion is mediocre, and users keep telling you the site "feels slow." What's going on?

The answer is that your lab LCP and your field LCP are measuring different things, and they often diverge significantly. Understanding the difference is one of the most important things you can do for site performance — and one of the most widely misunderstood.

Lab Data vs. Field Data

Lab data is a simulation

When PageSpeed Insights runs a lab test, it loads your page in a controlled environment: a specific device (mid-tier Android phone), a specific connection (simulated slow 4G at 1.6Mbps), a specific geographic origin. That simulation is useful for catching obvious problems. But it doesn't reflect your actual users — their devices, networks, locations, browser extensions, cached assets, or the time of day they visit.

Field data is reality

Field data, shown in PageSpeed Insights as "Discover what your real users are experiencing," comes from the Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) — actual LCP measurements recorded by real Chrome users loading your real site. This is what Google actually uses for ranking. This is what matters.

A green lab score with a red field score means you solved the wrong problem. The simulation passes; your users struggle.

Why They Diverge

1. Your users have slower connections

Simulated "slow 4G" (1.6Mbps) is often faster than the actual median connection speed of users in emerging markets and rural areas. If a significant portion of your audience is on real slow 4G or weak WiFi, your actual LCP could be 3–4× your lab score.

2. Geographic distance from your server

If your server is in us-east-1 and users are in Southeast Asia, they're paying an extra 200–400ms in latency on every request — before your page even starts loading. Lab tests typically run from a nearby origin. Field data captures this geographic penalty.

3. Third-party scripts block rendering in the real world

Browser extensions, third-party scripts added by your marketing team, and A/B testing tools fire in ways that don't show up cleanly in a headless lab environment. In a real browser, they compete for the main thread. Your hero image sits waiting while three analytics scripts initialize.

4. Your LCP element may not be what you think

LCP measures the render time of the largest image or text block in the viewport. In a clean lab test, that's probably your hero image. But real users arrive at different scroll positions, with different viewport sizes, or with content shifted by injected banners. The LCP element may be different for field users than for your simulation.

How to check your real field LCP

Go to PageSpeed Insights for your URL. Look for "Discover what your real users are experiencing." If it says no data is available, use Google Search Console → Core Web Vitals report instead — it aggregates field data across all pages with sufficient traffic.

How to Close the Gap

1. Test from real geographies

Use WebPageTest (webpagetest.org) and run tests from multiple locations — especially where your actual traffic comes from. You'll often identify TTFB problems caused by geographic distance that a CDN could solve in a day.

2. Compress your LCP image

The single highest-leverage fix in most audits. A 1.4MB hero image converted to WebP and resized to actual display dimensions can drop to under 80KB — a 17× reduction. The LCP improvement is usually dramatic.

3. Add resource hints for critical origins

If your LCP image is served from a CDN or different origin, add a <link rel="preconnect"> to that origin in your <head>. This eliminates the DNS + TCP + TLS handshake time before the browser starts requesting the image.

The Takeaway

Lab data is a useful diagnostic tool. Field data is your actual product's performance. A passing lab score is a floor, not a ceiling. If your field LCP is in the red while your lab score is green, you have a real problem that real users are experiencing every day — it just doesn't show up in your morning performance check.

The fix usually starts with one question: what is my LCP element, how big is it, and where does it come from? Answer that, optimize the resource, then measure again — in the field.
